The number
How is "safe to spend" worked out?
It starts from your budget for the period, subtracts what you have already spent, then subtracts the bills Mona expects before the period ends — rent, subscriptions, anything it has found repeating in your own history.
So a $4,500 month with $1,416 spent leaves $3,084 in the budget. Take off $1,500 of rent due on the 28th and $300 of subscriptions still to charge, and $1,284 is what is genuinely free. That is the number at the top of the screen.
Why is it lower than my bank balance?
Because your balance counts money that is already promised to someone else. No app should tell you the rent is available to spend. Mona sets those promises aside first, which is the whole point of the number.
What does the bar under the number mean?
It carries two things at once: the fill is how much of your budget you have spent, and the marker is how far through the period you are. Fill behind the marker means you are pacing well. Fill ahead of it means you are spending faster than the month is passing.
Using Mona
What are the fastest ways to add an expense?
Three: a purpose-built keypad with your most-used categories one tap away; typing it in plain words, so "coffee 5" files itself; or saying it out loud. You can also ask Siri without opening the app.
Do transfers between my own accounts count as spending?
No. Moving money from current account to savings is not an expense, and Mona treats it as a transfer so it never distorts your budget or your safe-to-spend number.
Can I budget by category, or for something other than a month?
Yes to both. Budgets can run by month, week, quarter or year, and you can set them per category when one part of your spending needs watching more closely than the rest.
How does Mona find my recurring charges?
It reads the history already in the app and looks for charges that repeat at a regular interval and amount. Nothing is sent anywhere to do this — the pattern matching happens on your device.
Money, data and devices
What does Mona cost?
Nothing. Every feature, for everyone, with nothing locked. No subscription, no ads, no upsell, and no account to create.
Does it sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Yes, through your own iCloud account, so your data goes to Apple's private container tied to your Apple Account rather than to any server we run. Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices and keep iCloud enabled for Mona.
Does Mona work offline?
Completely. There is no server to be down, and no network is needed to add an expense, read your budgets or see your safe to spend.
Can I get my data out?
Any time, as a spreadsheet. You can also make encrypted backups that you keep yourself and restore later.
What data does Mona collect?
Your financial data stays on your device and in your own iCloud. Anonymous crash reports and usage events are sent to Firebase so the app can be fixed and improved — never your transactions, amounts or account names. The Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is and is not sent, including the fact that there is currently no in-app switch to turn diagnostics off.
Which languages and currencies does it support?
Nine languages: English, Vietnamese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese. Amounts, dates and numbers are written the way your country writes them.
